Wireless Router – Long Range
25 Nov
There are a couple of different metrics that are important for judging wireless routers on, but an important one that many people overlook is wireless router range. Wireless is a great technology when you have a great signal, and a rather poor technology when you have a poor signal. Getting a good signal, then, is important.
Wireless Router – Long Range
Here are some of the features to look for from long range wireless routers.
- External Antennas - This isn’t always an accurate way to judge wireless router range, but generally, wireless routers with external antennas tend to get better range. External antennas are, on average, bigger and more powerful than the internal variety.
- Multiple Antennas - When it comes to wireless router range, two antennas is better than one, and three antennas is better than two. Again, it’s not always accurate, because two powerful antennas would likely do a better job of giving you long range than three weak antennas, but it’s a good metric to help you sort through the wireless routers on the market.
Best Wireless Routers – Long Range
Here are a few of the best long range wireless routers.
Buffalo Technology N600
When it comes to range, there are few wireless routers with better range than the Buffalo Technology N600. The two large external antennas are directional, meaning you can point them wherever you like to maximize the long range capabilities of the router.
This both maximizes the maximum range of your wireless network, but more importantly, the distance at which you will get a strong signal is greatly extended, which is the most important part of a long range wireless router.
D-Link DIR-655
The D-Link DIR-655 is another excellent long range wireless router. Three external antennas, rather than two gives you plenty of power to get to the far corners of your house.
In fact D-Link claims that the DIR-655 has a full 6 times greater range than the average wireless router. I’m not sure how much stock you can put in that, but even if it’s half true, it’s still an impressive increase in range.
Buffalo Technology N300
The Buffalo Technology N300 is very similar to the N600 above, the only real difference is that the N300 lacks the dual band that the N600 comes with. Crucially, it includes the same large external antennas that the N600 has, which is a big part of the N600′s impressive range.
So if you don’t want to pay for dual band then don’t buy dual band. The N300 is a great wireless router, just without dual band.
If none of these wireless routers are quite right for you, you can find more to look at over at the compare wireless routers page.
